Psalm 119:11 says ” Your Word have I treasured in my heart , that I may not sin against You. “ ( NASB )
The KJV says “ HID in my heart ” ( NKJV ” hidden ” ) ( NIV ” hidden ” )
The Amplified Bible says ” laid up in my heart “
All renderings seem to advance the idea of ” retaining ” not to mention the term ” treasuring ” which when combined with ” retaining ” gives a clear picture of saving the Word in our minds because of It’s great value and worth.
We might naturally ask ” What is that great value and worth” ? The answer is found in the latter part of the verse, ” that I may not sin against You. ” How simple and yet profound ! We take in and retain ( memorize ) God’s Word so that it will help us not to sin. The applications are almost endless. Here is one on a personal note, something that I have to be on guard against. I seem to sometimes worry and get discouraged with job related problems and challenges. The cure for that is Phill 4:6-7, ” Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, through prayer and suplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God which passes all comprehension will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. “
Here the Bible gives me a course of action and a promise ! Since worry and undue care are, in fact , sin, these two verses help me to avoid that sin.
What sin do you stuggle with ? Whatever it might be, there are verses that can help you if you will ” hide them in your heart ” . Find them, pray for God to make His Word alive to you, then write them down ( 3×5 cards are good )and memorize them. You will be blessed as you allow God’s Word to transform your life ! Carry them with you during the day if you are able. Add new verses to the ones you already know. Review them regularly and you will find a constant source of strength in your life.
Remember the Words of our Lord Jesus Christ , ” Man shall not live on bread alone , but on every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. ” Matt. 4:4
